St. Thomas Entry Requirements and Customs

To visit St. Thomas if you are a United States or Canada resident the only documents you will need are either a driver's license, or some other proof of citizenship. A passport is not necessary, but if you have one, it can speed up the process and will also enable you to visit some of the other islands in the area.

St. Thomas USVI If you are visiting from Europe or any other country you will need a passport and a United States visa to enter St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

If you are bringing any medications along with you, you should also bring along a copy of the prescription. This will save you plenty of time at the customs. Also, keep the medication in its original container. This will help customs agents identify your medication and will save more time. Items that are of course prohibited include drugs and firearms.

If you are planning on bring your pet along on your vacation you will need a certified certificate from your veterinarian stating that all shots that are required have been given.

Leaving, St. Thomas if you are a United States citizen you will be excited if you have done any form of shopping. Every citizen of the United States can leave or have mailed to them $1,200 worth of duty free merchandise every 30 days. This even includes the children! If you do go over your limit the dutiable fee for up to $1000 over is only a flat rate of 5 percent. If you are having packages sent to you after you leave St. Thomas these are exempt from the duty. This way you can order items in quantity and have them shipped directly to your home without having to pay any duty fees.

You can even as a family traveling together can make a joint declaration. This will entitle you to higher purchases without the duty costs.

If you want to send gifts back home to family or friends you may do so as well. You can send one package per day to the same address spending up to $100. These items to do have to declared either. But, you can not mail alcohol or tobacco products.

If you wish to bring back your favorite liquor, you may return to the United States with 4 liters duty free and if you have chosen one that is produced in the Virgin Islands you may also bring an extra liter. This is an extra bonus. You must be at least 21 years of age to leave St. Thomas with liquor.

Some items such as plants in soil can not be taken to the mainland, but most fruits can be taken home. To learn more about what items you may bring back home you can contact the Department of Agriculture at 340-776-2787.
